South Africa - The Sea

09.02.2009 - Travel

The new week begins windy again. Flying is out of the question. In the meantime, we can deduce the temperature from the cat's place in the bush: Cat in the bush = hot as hell. So off to the sea! Our destination for today is Westcoast, more precisely 'Melkboss' (milk bush???). We take Chrigi's air-conditioned car and drive via a detour in Durbanvill (withdraw Rands at the EC ATM, that works???) towards the beach. And what a beach! Miles long, deserted, wide and flat as a flounder. The waves move here very fast and surely 50 meters over the almost flat beach, before they recede again into the deeper bay. As they flow off, small ripples and pretty sand dunes form. Corinne stops and begins to sink deeper into the extremely fine sand with each wave.

In the back, quieter part of the beach are tons of shells. Corinne collects the most beautiful ones and I am allowed to carry them. We walk for about an hour along the beautiful beach. The water of the Atlantic is cold but refreshing. Against all odds we meet a few surfers at the end, which dare to use the mini-sanding in the icy water. The beach reminds me strongly of Sicily 20 years ago... Only luxury villas but no one on the beach. The architecture of the villas amazes us: it is style break to style break. But each for itself would certainly be nice.

Before heading home, we make a pit stop at a beach bar. Savanna Dry Light, what else. And a shared plate of calamari. Mmmm. We watch the kite surfers, who are having fun first on the beach and later on the high waves. I decide to book a kite surfing course next week if the wind remains too strong to fly.
