South Africa - Table Mountain

06.02.2009 - Travel

Feel after yesterday's crash landing today fortunately already better. The bruises are now clearly visible, but hurt less than expected. We start the hot day as always comfortable. At breakfast at 10 o'clock it is already 32 degrees in the shade. Today we expect about 40 degrees. Nevertheless we decide to explore the 'Water Front' and Cape Town. Fredi offers himself once again as a driver, but unloads us for a change on the spot and Corinne and I explore Cape Town on our own - Fredi has already seen Cape Town twice in the last 15 years ;-)

Unfortunately, the ferry that goes to Robben Island, where we wanted to see the famous, infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is fully booked. And the next one leaves only two hours later. We reschedule and decide for Fredi's second tip: Hop on Bus and Table Mountain. The two-story Hop on Bus passes all the major sights of Cape Town. Ideal for a first exploration - why did we take bicycles instead of the bus in Barcelona at the same temperatures (40 degrees)! Of course, the bus is anything but punctual. But we get the opportunity to watch the three road workers at their demanding work: In slow motion and with a helmet. Well, only one of them was working.

In the bus on the second floor we can stand it for just 10 minutes, until we have to flee from the heat. Downstairs is air-conditioned. The headphones plugged in we listen to the interesting stories from tape and live.

At Table Mountain we hop off the bus and try our luck at the Swiss gondola. This since Zeitweise Wochenlang because of too strong wind closed. But we are lucky, the gondola goes and also the profezeite two-hour queue we master in 5 minutes. The gondola floor rotates during the ride! The view is magnificent. It pulls me again in the air, or on the sunny slopes which nestle against the blue lagoons.

At the top we stand in the midst of a beautifully developed rock garden - have imagined dien Table Mountain anderst. In India (Panchgani) was above a mini-desert on the table mountain. Here still shrubs grow between the stones. The whole thing is extremely reminiscent of the game "Myst - Exile", even the soundscape: Crickets chirping. We Fötelen what the stuff holds. It is beautiful up here. We are hungry and go to the big inn. We get a seat outside and can watch the cheeky Red Wing sparrows.

Also the way back with the gondola we survive despite Corinne's fears and we just catch the standing Hop on bus Zurich to the city. This time the bus drives along the coast and we can marvel at the expensive villas and the beautiful beaches. This time we made it under the sun roof on the second floor of the bus - The seats outside were meanwhile like glowing hot plates.

We get off again at the starting point, the shopping district 'Water Front'. Actually, this means the whole harbor area, which has been developed into a shopping mile in recent years (reminds us once again of Barcelona). The shipyard buildings are now connected to a huge shopping mall, in which one can easily get lost. We sit down after a shopping spree in a coffee in which a huge selection of magazines to read. I forget the time with cappucino and interesting articles about the holographic universe... Fredi comes to pick us up after a phone call.

The evening slowly falls and the temperatures become more bearable again. A family of wild guineafowl has strayed into our garden. Tiger is generated that they make noise behind his back. He just turns in their direction, but seems to prefer to be fed by Fredi than to get up. The Perlhüners strut past Hotzenplotz together with the cubs in the direction of the pool. One of them has already fallen in. But not this time. They leave the garden through the back door.
